Damage to a wing is usually caused by the Canary flying into a stationary object, like a window or by being attacked by a Butcher Bird or Hawk through the aviary wire. It is difficult to treat and a Vet, who understands the physiology of the wing, usually has the best outcome. The wing is usually bound against the body using a piece of cloth about 10mm wide and taken around the body 3 – 5 turns before knotting. Be careful not to tie too tightly or the bird may be unable to breath. Keep the bird quiet for 3-4 weeks in a small cage and ensure that the bird can reach food and water. After the 3 - 4 weeks allow the bird to fly and monitor progress, as it may be necessary to continue the treatment for longer. Published 28/02/05
